The pre-1900 era Smith & Barney railroad sleeper car, which comprises the oldest part of the Silver Coach, was purchased in the 1930s after the end of Prohibition by John and Fred Bablitch. In the 1940s, it was moved to its present site in Stevens Point, WI. It was then converted into a distinctive restaurant / bar featuring original stained glass and carved wood paneling with inlaid designs.
In 1955, the late Charles "Pete" Redfield, the owner at that time, began serving Cantonese food by adding a dining room. Jim Gitter purchased the Silver Coach in 1987. Through his years as owner, the interior and exterior of its railroad car appearance were restored.
Chef Rob Tuszka, who had been the executive chef at Stevens Point Country Club, and his wife, Brenda, purchased Silver Coach in 2001. Chef Rob continues the tradition of unique, made-from-scratch flavors that the Silver Coach has become so well-known for. The restaurant seats 70 and also offers private dining rooms for two for those wishing a romantic dinner.
